Looking for a flute teacher and can't find one nearby? Online flute lessons solve that. These are live lessons with a person, not a course you work through alone. We meet on Zoom, Skype or MS Teams, whichever you already use, and my students are scattered across the UK and overseas.

I teach complete beginners, adult flute lessons for returners and improvers, and children working through the grades. Classical repertoire is the backbone, but I also teach jazz flute and improvisation, which is unusual and opens up a lot of music most flautists never touch.

Prices begin at £20 for a half-hour lesson. If you happen to be in South-East London and would rather meet in person, my in-person flute lessons run from a studio in Lewisham.

Built for Video Lessons

Since 2020 I've worked out what actually helps over a video call. The camera goes side-on so I can see the angle of the headjoint against your lip, scores get marked up live on a shared screen, and everything we annotate is yours to keep.

Classical, Jazz & Folk

The flute carries orchestral and chamber repertoire beautifully, but it also swings. I hold an MA in Jazz Saxophone from Trinity Laban and have performed professionally in over twenty countries, so if you want to improvise rather than only read, that is taught properly rather than skipped over.

ABRSM Performance Grades

Remote students take the same graded exams as everyone else. Performance Grades are assessed from a recording you make at home, which means your postcode is irrelevant to the result. Jazz Flute is available at Grades 6 to 8 too — a route hardly any flute teacher will prepare you for.

Learn Flute Online, Wherever You Are

The flute gives its problems away visually more than most instruments. The angle of the headjoint against the lip, a raised shoulder, an embouchure that tightens as you climb — all of it reads perfectly well through a camera placed side-on. What video can't do is let us play together in the same acoustic, so I lean on backing tracks, live annotation of the score, and recordings you make for me between lessons.

Nearly all my remote students are in the UK, and most came to me for practical reasons rather than technological ones: a school run that clashes, shift work, or simply no flute teacher within a sensible drive. Lessons can shift to a different evening at short notice, and you are always playing your own instrument in your own space rather than adapting to someone else's room.

Beginner online flute lessons From £20 / 30 min

Beginner Flute Lessons Online

Starting from nothing? Your first lesson happens on the headjoint alone — no keys, no reading, just finding the note. It sounds unglamorous and it is the fastest route to a decent sound. From there we build breath support and a posture that doesn't fight you, which between them determine how good you'll sound years later. Most people manage a real tune within a few weeks.

Before you buy anything, talk to me. There are a handful of student flutes worth the money and a great many that aren't, a curved headjoint is worth considering for a smaller child, and the cheapest listing online usually turns into an expensive mistake. Adults taking it up for the first time are genuinely welcome — nobody has ever been too old for this.

Intermediate Flute Lessons Online

Somewhere around here your playing stops sounding like a beginner's and starts sounding like yours. The work is tone that holds up in every register, intonation you can trust, a vibrato you control rather than one that just happens, and a third octave that isn't frightening. Grade 4 to 6 material gets woven through ordinary lessons rather than crammed.

This is also where I'd nudge you towards playing without written music. We start with the blues, add a few standards, and lift phrases straight off recordings. Hardly any classical flute teacher offers this, and it makes players far less dependent on the page.

Advanced Flute Lessons Online

Advanced lessons go after colour, extended technique, the standard orchestral excerpts, and transcription as a way of building vocabulary. Underneath all of it sits the question of what you actually want to sound like. I coach Grade 8 and ARSM candidates, conservatoire auditionees, and players taking Jazz Flute Performance Grades 6 to 8, which are now sat digitally from anywhere.

Long plateaus usually come down to one or two habits, and an outside ear finds them quickly. If all you want is a diagnostic session or some audition coaching, book a single lesson — there's no obligation to take a regular slot.

Flute lesson prices don't change between screen and studio — no travel is involved, so none is charged for. Daytime lessons are cheaper if your schedule allows. The first one costs nothing, and after that payment is by bank transfer in sterling.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much are online flute lessons?

Half an hour is £20, 45 minutes £30, an hour £40. There's no travel element in the price and daytime slots are discounted. Younger children and new adult learners generally start at 30 minutes, moving up to 45 once breath control makes longer sessions worthwhile.

Getting the first note is the hardest part of the flute, because the sound comes from directing an air stream rather than blowing through a reed. Most beginners manage it within the first lesson or two on the headjoint alone, and are playing simple tunes within a month. Most people reach a solid Grade 1 standard somewhere between six months and a year in.

You can, and it's the same qualification wherever you sit it. Performance Grades are marked from a video you record and submit, so Grades 1 to 8 are open to anyone with a camera. No prerequisite applies up to Grade 5. Beyond that you'll need Grade 5 Music Theory or an approved alternative first. Jazz Flute works identically at Grades 6 to 8.

Not much: your flute, a stand, and something with a camera on a reasonable connection. Position it to one side rather than straight on, so I can see the headjoint against your lip and the line of your shoulders. Wired earphones prevent feedback. An external microphone sharpens tone work but is entirely optional.

I do, and I've taught on programmes in more than twenty countries. The real constraint is the clock rather than the distance: my teaching day runs on UK time, which suits Europe and the Middle East well and North America if a morning lesson works for you.
