Want to learn to play saxophone but there's no decent teacher nearby? Online saxophone lessons solve that. I teach live one-to-one over Zoom, Skype or MS Teams — real lessons with a real teacher, not pre-recorded videos — to students anywhere in the UK and around the world.

Saxophone lessons for beginners are what I'm asked for most, and the sax is a genuinely forgiving instrument to start on — most people get a note out in the first lesson. I also teach adult saxophone lessons for returners and improvers, children's lessons, and jazz saxophone lessons for players who want to improvise. Alto, tenor, soprano and baritone are all covered.

Built for Video Lessons

I've been teaching over video since 2020 and the format is deliberate, not improvised. Camera angles that actually show your embouchure and hands, screen-shared notation you can keep, and practice materials you can work through between lessons.

Jazz, Classical & Pop

Bebop, soul, funk, pop or the classical repertoire — the saxophone does all of it. I hold an MA in Jazz Saxophone from Trinity Laban and have performed professionally in over twenty countries, so improvisation is taught properly rather than skipped over.

ABRSM Performance Grades

ABRSM Performance Grades are digital exams marked from a video you record yourself, so online students can take real graded exams anywhere in the world. I'll help you pick repertoire, navigate the 2026 syllabus change and get the recording right.

Learn Saxophone Online, Wherever You Are

Good saxophone teaching is mostly about sound, breath and tension — and all three are things I can see and hear clearly over a video call. Where a webcam genuinely can't help is playing along in the same room, so instead I use backing tracks, screen-shared notation and recorded playing between lessons to fill that gap.

Most of my online students are UK-based — in towns where the nearest saxophone teacher is an hour's drive, or with schedules that make a fixed weekly journey impossible. Being on video means we can move a lesson to a different day without anyone getting in a car, and it means you learn on your own instrument, in the room where you actually practise.

Beginner Saxophone Lessons Online

Never picked one up? We start at the very beginning: assembling the instrument, fitting a reed, forming an embouchure and getting a clean first note. I spend real time on breathing and a relaxed jaw, because those two habits decide how good your tone will be three years from now. Most beginners are playing recognisable tunes within a few weeks.

If you're buying your first saxophone I'll help you avoid the usual mistakes before you spend anything — which student alto is worth it, what reed strength to start on, and why the cheapest option online is rarely the cheapest in the end. Adults starting from nothing are very welcome, and there is no age at which it stops being possible to learn.

Intermediate Saxophone Lessons Online

This is where the saxophone starts to sound like you. We'll even out your tone across the registers, tighten up intonation, sharpen sight reading and open up the altissimo range. If you're working towards Grades 4 to 6, we'll build the scales and studies into normal lessons rather than cramming them.

It's also the usual point where improvisation stops feeling like guesswork. We'll work through blues and rhythm changes, learn vocabulary from recordings, and get you playing over backing tracks with confidence.

Advanced Saxophone Lessons Online

For advanced players, lessons move to harmonic sophistication, upper-structure voicings, rhythmic displacement, transcription work and building a personal sound. I also coach for Grade 8, ARSM and conservatoire auditions, and for the Jazz Performance Grades 6 to 8 now bookable worldwide as digital exams.

If you've plateaued — and most self-taught players do, usually on tone or time rather than technique — a handful of online sessions is often enough to identify what's actually holding you back. One-off consultation lessons are fine; you don't have to commit to a weekly slot.

How much do online saxophone lessons cost?

Online saxophone lessons start from £20 for 30 minutes, with 45-minute (£30) and 60-minute (£40) options. There is no travel cost built into online lessons, and discounted daytime slots are available. Most beginners start with a weekly 30-minute lesson and move to 45 minutes as their stamina and repertoire grow.

The saxophone is one of the easiest wind instruments to get started on. Most complete beginners produce a recognisable note in their first lesson and are playing simple tunes within a few weeks, because the fingering is logical and the keywork sits naturally under the hands. Reaching a comfortable Grade 1 standard typically takes six to twelve months of regular practice. What takes longer is tone, and that is exactly the part a teacher can shortcut for you.

Yes. ABRSM Performance Grades are digital exams assessed from a video recording you submit yourself, available at Grades 1 to 8 and bookable worldwide. There are no entry requirements for Initial Grade or Grades 1 to 5. For Grades 6 to 8 you first need a pass at Grade 5 Music Theory or an accepted alternative. Jazz Performance Grades 6 to 8 for saxophone can also be booked worldwide. I prepare online students for these throughout the year, including choosing repertoire and getting the recording right.

A saxophone, a music stand, a device with a camera, and a broadband connection. A laptop or tablet propped so I can see your hands, embouchure and posture works better than a phone held close. Wired earphones help avoid feedback. If you have an external microphone or an audio interface it will improve tone work, but it is not required to start.

Yes. I teach online students internationally and have taught on programmes in over twenty countries. The practical limit is time zones: I teach UK hours, so Europe and the Middle East fit easily, and North America generally works for morning slots your side.
