About Naima

A Ballad Named for His Wife

Naima was composed by John Coltrane in 1959 and named after his first wife, Juanita Naima Grubbs. It appears on Giant Steps (Atlantic SD 1311), released in February 1960 — Coltrane’s first album as leader for Atlantic. Among an album built largely on dazzling, fast-moving harmony, Naima is the still centre: a tender, unhurried ballad that has become one of his most loved and most played compositions.

There is a detail worth knowing about the recording. Most of the Giant Steps album was cut in May 1959 with Tommy Flanagan and Art Taylor, but Coltrane was not happy with the Naima takes from those and earlier sessions. The version you hear on the record is the only track from a later date — 2 December 1959 — recorded with Miles Davis’s rhythm section: Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. That familiar, understated band gave Coltrane the calm, centred reading the ballad needed.

Naima went on to become one of Coltrane’s most enduring pieces. He kept it in his live book for the rest of his life, returning to it again and again right up to a famous 1966 performance at the Village Vanguard with Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane, and it remains one of the most-covered ballads in all of jazz.

Major Sevenths Over a Standing Bass

Naima’s soaring melodic beauty is rendered at its most poignant on the tenor saxophone. The melody lingers at the top end of the conventional range of the instrument, giving it that human vocal quality. Rather than moving through changes, the tune floats over a series of rich major-seventh chords over sustained pedal tones. The A sections hold an Eb in the bass — the dominant of the home key of Ab — while the upper harmony shifts above it; the bridge lifts the pedal to Bb. The melody itself is spare, a few long singing phrases, coloured by the shimmering beauty of the shifting palette of sounds underneath that gives Naima its suspended, hymn-like calm.

That standing-bass approach makes Naima a striking contrast with its album-mate, the title track Giant Steps. This study in oscillating vertical harmony provides the perfect counterpoint to Naima's haunting modality. That modal sound was in the air in 1959: the same year, Coltrane played on Miles Davis’s So What, the track that launched modal jazz, which shares Naima’s stillness and its freedom from fast-moving chords.

Naima Chords & Modes: A Bar-by-Bar Guide

From a technical point of view, each four-bar progression over the pedal point can be heard as a long-form suspension — or rather a gradient of tensions within that suspension — until the tune finally resolves to the tonic in the coda. Understanding these tensions, and the modes they generate, is key to developing an aural map of the melody and the options open to the improviser. How to Learn Naima

A Practical Approach for Saxophonists

1. Learn the melody and let it breathe. Naima is mostly long notes and space, so the sound and shape of each phrase matter more than the number of notes. Listen to the 1959 recording many times and sing the melody, in time, before you ever touch the horn.

2. Work on your sound. A ballad exposes your tone completely. Spend time on long tones, dynamics and judicious use of vibrato —. Sit at the piano and sustain the chords while you practise your long tones over the top. The shifting harmonic colours shape the requirements of your intonation.

3. Understand the pedal harmony. Map the major-seventh chords over the Eb and Bb pedals and hear how the upper voices move. Knowing the chord tones, and the modes they imply, lets you decorate the melody and improvise with complimentary.

4. Leave space. Resist the urge to fill the bars. The power of Naima is in restraint — long phrases, rests and dynamic shape. Record yourself and listen back honestly.

The essential version is the original on John Coltrane — Giant Steps (1959/1960, Atlantic), with Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. It is a masterclass in tone and restraint, and the place to start: listen to it many times and let the sound of the melody settle before you try to play it.
