One of the most difficult things I remember about starting out learning to play jazz as a saxophone player was learning tunes and jazz standards. Before I knew how to learn music from recordings, I was always searching for a lead sheet in Eb for alto saxophone, or Bb for tenor saxophone. Often I couldn't find one and ended up learning the tune in the wrong key or in Concert pitch. Dealing with transposing is a minefield for the aspiring saxophonist, when you have nobody to guide you.

That's why I have compiled this sheet music index of downloadable PDFs, completely for free. An online real book — for each jazz standard or tune, you will find a free download version of the sheet music in PDF format, for Concert Pitch, Eb for Alto Saxophone and Bb for Tenor Saxophone. Whether you play soprano sax, trumpet, clarinet, flute, piano, guitar, trombone or bass, you will find the right transposition here. You can even find multiple keys for selected tunes, including On Green Dolphin Street in the key of C and also in the key of Eb.

Online real book — free jazz lead sheet PDF downloads for saxophone, trumpet, clarinet and all instruments

What is a Real Book?

A Brief History of the Jazz Fake Book

A real book — sometimes called a fake book — is a collection of lead sheets: simplified, single-page scores that show the melody and chord symbols of a tune. The original Real Book was compiled by students at Berklee College of Music in the 1970s, and although it was initially an underground publication, it quickly became the single most important reference for jazz musicians learning and performing standards.

The concept is simple and practical. A lead sheet gives you just enough information to play a tune — the melody, the chords and the form — while leaving room for your own interpretation, phrasing and improvisation. This is how jazz musicians have always shared repertoire: a framework that invites individual expression.

This online real book follows the same principle. Every lead sheet below is available as a free PDF download in three transpositions: Concert Pitch (for piano, guitar, flute, trombone and bass), Bb (for tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone, trumpet and clarinet) and Eb (for alto saxophone and baritone saxophone).

Understanding Transposing Instruments

Concert Pitch, Bb and Eb Explained

If you play piano, guitar, flute, trombone or bass, you read music at concert pitch — the notes on the page correspond directly to the notes that sound. But many wind instruments are transposing instruments, meaning that the written note and the sounding note are different. This can be confusing when you are starting out, and it is exactly why having lead sheets available in the correct key matters so much.

Bb instruments include the tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone, trumpet and clarinet. When a Bb instrument plays a written C, the sounding pitch is Bb — a whole tone lower. Eb instruments include the alto saxophone and baritone saxophone. When an Eb instrument plays a written C, the sounding pitch is Eb. Each lead sheet below is provided in all three transpositions so that every musician can play from the correct part without needing to transpose on the fly.

How to Use These Lead Sheets

Getting the Most from Your Free Jazz Sheet Music

Each lead sheet in this online real book shows the melody written in standard notation together with chord symbols above the staff. This is all you need to perform the tune — the melody gives you the theme, the chords guide your accompaniment or improvisation, and the form tells you how the song is structured. Most jazz standards follow common forms such as AABA (32 bars), ABAC (32 bars) or 12-bar blues.

Start by choosing the correct transposition for your instrument. If you play alto or baritone saxophone, download the Eb version. If you play tenor or soprano saxophone, trumpet or clarinet, choose the Bb version. Pianists, guitarists, flautists, trombonists and bass players should use the Concert pitch version. Once you have the right PDF, learn the melody first — sing it, then play it slowly on your instrument. When the melody sits comfortably, begin working on the chord changes using arpeggios or simple scale patterns. If you need guidance working through this process, saxophone lessons or a jazz tutorial can help you develop your skills faster.

For further study, why not take a look at our deep dive on Duke Ellington and his most famous songs, which also has lead sheet downloads available. Or, try pairing these lead sheets with the free saxophone transcriptions available elsewhere on this site. Learning how great improvisers such as Sonny Rollins, Cannonball Adderley and Charlie Parker navigate these same chord changes is one of the most effective ways to build your jazz vocabulary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a lead sheet? +

A lead sheet is a simplified form of musical notation that shows the melody, chord symbols and lyrics (if any) of a song on a single page. It gives a musician everything they need to perform a tune without a full arrangement. Lead sheets are the standard way jazz musicians learn and share repertoire.

What is a real book or fake book? +

A real book (or fake book) is a collection of lead sheets for jazz standards and popular tunes. The original Real Book was compiled by students at Berklee College of Music in the 1970s and became the most widely used reference for jazz musicians worldwide. This online real book provides free PDF lead sheets in multiple keys.

Why do I need lead sheets in different keys? +

Transposing instruments such as the saxophone, trumpet and clarinet read music in a different key to concert pitch. Alto saxophone and baritone saxophone read in Eb, while tenor saxophone, trumpet, soprano saxophone and clarinet read in Bb. Concert pitch lead sheets are used by piano, guitar, flute, trombone and bass. Having lead sheets in the correct transposition saves time and avoids errors.

Are these lead sheets really free? +

Yes — every lead sheet on this page is available as a completely free PDF download. No sign-up, no email required. Simply click the download link for the key you need. If you find them useful, consider sharing the page or getting in touch about saxophone lessons.

Can I request a tune that isn't listed here? +

Absolutely. This online real book is growing all the time. If there is a jazz standard or tune you would like added, send an email to tom@saxteacheruk.com or use the contact form at the bottom of this page.

How do I read a lead sheet? +

A lead sheet has three elements: a melody written in standard notation on the staff, chord symbols above the staff (such as Cmaj7, Dm7, G7), and the song form indicated by repeat signs and section markers. To perform from a lead sheet, play the melody as written for the head (theme), then use the chord symbols as a guide for improvisation or accompaniment. The form tells you how many times to repeat the changes.

What instrument transpositions are available? +

Every lead sheet is available in three transpositions: Concert pitch (for piano, guitar, flute, trombone and bass), Bb (for tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone, trumpet and clarinet), and Eb (for alto saxophone and baritone saxophone). Simply click the download button for the transposition that matches your instrument.
