The flute is unlike every other instrument on this site in one important way: there is no octave key. Where a saxophonist presses a thumb key and a clarinettist adds a register key, flute players move between octaves mostly through air speed and embouchure — which means a huge number of fingerings are shared between the low and middle registers, and a fresh set take over once you climb into the third octave. That makes a good flute fingering chart both simpler and, in places, trickier than a sax or clarinet chart. This page is designed to be the only flute fingering chart you need. It covers every chromatic note from low C4 up to high C7, explains exactly where and why fingerings change as you go up, gives you alternate and trill fingerings for the trickier notes, and walks through the embouchure and air-support work that actually makes the top of the range speak. The Registers of the Flute

Understanding flute range and registers

The concert flute spans roughly three octaves, from low C4 (middle C on the piano, or B3 with a B-foot joint) up to C7 and beyond. Unlike the saxophone or clarinet, the flute is edge-blown rather than reed-driven — you produce sound by directing a thin stream of air across the embouchure hole, and you move between octaves chiefly by speeding up that air stream and adjusting the shape of your lips, not by pressing a dedicated key. This is the single biggest thing that makes flute fingering different from every other woodwind on this site, and it is why we have organised this chart around register rather than a repeating key pattern.

Low Register — C4 to B4

The warmest, breathiest part of the flute's range, and the foundation everything else is built on. These are the fullest fingerings on the instrument — most notes here use several fingers down, similar in feel to a recorder, with the footjoint keys (operated by the right-hand little finger) adding the very lowest notes.

Middle Register — C5 to B5

The flute's core singing register, used for the majority of everyday playing. The bottom four notes — C5, C♯5, D5 and D♯5 — use their own dedicated fingerings rather than repeating the low register, leaning heavily on the D♯/E♭ key. From E5 upward, though, the genuinely useful thing to know is that fingerings are identical to their low-register counterparts all the way to B5 — you simply speed up your air and narrow your embouchure slightly to jump the octave.

High Register — C6 to B6

Bright and penetrating, and where fingerings genuinely change rather than repeat. C6 and C♯6 mirror the simplified fingerings used for C5 and C♯5, but from D6 upward every note has its own combination — typically built around the thumb plate and the D♯/E♭ key, which is routinely added as a "vent" even when the note itself isn't D♯ or E♭, simply because it helps the note speak cleanly. The thumb B♭ key plays only a supporting role up here, appearing in a couple of alternate fingerings rather than as a routine stabiliser.

Extreme Register — C7 and above

The outer edge of standard flute repertoire. Fingerings here are closer to specialised harmonic combinations than a simple continuation of the pattern below, and response varies noticeably between individual flutes. Treat any extreme-register fingering as a tested starting point rather than a fixed rule.

Why Flute Fingerings Repeat Across Octaves

The most-asked question from sax and clarinet doublers

If you already play saxophone or clarinet, the flute's approach to octaves takes some getting used to. On sax, one thumb key raises almost any note an octave. On clarinet, a register key jumps the pitch by a twelfth. On flute, there is no equivalent key at all — the same six main tone holes, covered in the same pattern, can produce two (and sometimes three) different pitches an octave apart, purely depending on how fast and how focused your air stream is and exactly how you shape your lips over the embouchure hole. What actually changes between octaves

From E4 up to B4, the fingering for a given note name is identical whether you are in the low or middle register — E4 and E5 use the same fingers, F4 and F5 use the same fingers, and so on, all the way up to B4/B5. What changes is your air: faster, more focused air aimed slightly higher across the embouchure hole jumps you into the octave above. This is why long-tone practice that deliberately isolates the air and embouchure, rather than the fingers, is so central to flute technique — the fingers are frequently doing nothing different at all. The bottom four notes of each octave — C, C♯, D and D♯ — are the exception: they use their own dedicated fingerings rather than repeating, generally built around the D♯/E♭ key, so treat those four as fingerings to learn individually rather than notes you can carry up from the register below.

Where the pattern breaks down

From C6 upward, fingerings diverge properly. C6 and C♯6 still echo their middle-register counterparts (C5 and C♯5), but every note from D6 onward is built specifically for the top of the range, typically combining the thumb plate with the D♯/E♭ key rather than reusing anything from lower down. By the third octave — C7 and above — fingerings lean on the two trill keys and the footjoint rollers in combinations that bear little resemblance to anything below — more on that in the next section.

The practical upshot: practise long tones slurring an octave on the same fingering (low E to middle E, low F to middle F) to build the air-speed control that makes the middle of the range work, then treat the top of the range as its own, separate learning project.

Breaking Into the Third Octave — A Complete Guide

Flute high-register fingerings, technique, and practice strategy

The third octave (roughly C6 upward) is where the flute's reputation for being "easy at first, hard later" really shows itself. Fingerings here use cross-fingerings and venting combinations that exploit higher partials of the air column, similar in principle to altissimo playing on saxophone or clarinet, even though the flute has no reed. The good news is that with the right approach every player can build a workable, reliable third octave.

What makes the third octave different

In the low and middle registers, the fingering pattern is broadly logical — cover more holes for lower notes, fewer for higher ones, with air speed handling the octave jump. In the third octave, individual notes use specific combinations of open and closed holes that create a particular venting pattern, encouraging the air column to favour a higher harmonic. This is why third-octave fingerings can look so unrelated to the notes below them, and why different flutes — and different headjoint cuts in particular — can respond slightly differently to the same fingering.

The three pillars of third-octave success

Producing a reliable high note needs three things working together. First, a fast, narrow, well-aimed air stream — think "more speed, not more volume." Second, a slightly firmer, more forward embouchure with the lips drawn in at the corners, without pinching. Third, voicing: raise the back of the tongue and narrow the oral cavity, as if silently saying "ee," which is the single biggest factor separating players who can access the third octave reliably from those who cannot.

Common third-octave mistakes

The most common mistake is simply blowing harder — this usually just makes the note louder and flatter, or causes it to jump to the wrong octave entirely. The second is rolling the flute too far in or out to compensate, which throws off tone and intonation elsewhere. The third is attempting the third octave before the middle register is fully secure. Build from the bottom up, and treat published third-octave fingerings as tested starting points you may need to adjust slightly for your own flute.

Alternate Fingerings — When and Why

Choosing the right fingering for the musical context

Like saxophone and clarinet, the flute has a healthy set of alternate fingerings, and B♭ is the classic example — this chart gives you three ways to play it. The default combines the thumb plate, left index and right index with the D♯/E♭ key; swapping in the thumb B♭ key in place of the thumb plate is smoother in flat keys and fast passages; and using the dedicated B♭ lever alongside the thumb plate is a further option worth having ready for particular passages. F is another note with two common options — the standard fingering and a "forked" alternative, which some players find speaks more reliably in certain passages. The upper and extreme registers carry the most alternates of all, since flutes vary considerably in how they respond up there.

As a general rule, use the standard fingering unless you have a specific reason to switch. In the interactive chart, alternate fingerings are marked with blue tags and trill fingerings with orange tags. Each includes a description of when it is most useful.

Embouchure and Air Support for High Notes

The technique behind reliable flute high notes

The fingering chart gets your fingers in the right place, but on the flute more than any other woodwind, your embouchure and air are what actually determine which octave you land in. For high notes — whether top of the middle register or deep into the third octave — three adjustments make the biggest difference.

Embouchure

Your basic embouchure should not change dramatically between registers. Lips relaxed and slightly forward, a small, focused aperture, corners drawn in gently rather than stretched into a smile. For higher notes, narrow the aperture very slightly and draw the corners in a touch more firmly — think of tightening a drawstring, not clamping down. Roll the flute very slightly inward for extra height, and very slightly outward for extra depth and volume in the low register.

Air support

High notes need fast air, not necessarily more air. Imagine narrowing a garden hose to produce a jet instead of a trickle. Breathe from your diaphragm, then support with steady abdominal engagement rather than upper-chest tension. A useful exercise: breathe in fully, then hiss on “sss” for as long as you can at a consistent volume — this builds the same core support the third octave demands.

Voicing — the shape of the inside of your mouth — is the secret weapon of flute high-register playing, arguably more so than on any reed instrument, because the flute has no reed to help you and relies entirely on your air column shaping. For low notes, your tongue sits low (think “oh”). For high notes, raise the back of your tongue and narrow the space (think “ee”). Practise voicing away from the flute by whistling — notice how your tongue moves as the pitch rises. The same adjustment drives register changes on the flute, arguably even more than the fingerings do.

Daily Practice Routine for Extending Your Range

A 15-minute plan for building flute high notes

Consistency matters more than duration. This routine takes about fifteen minutes and can be added to the start of your normal practice. Practise it daily and most players see noticeable improvement within two to four weeks.

Step 1 — Octave slurs on one fingering (5 minutes)

Play low E, then slur to middle E using exactly the same fingering — the only thing that should change is your air speed and voicing. Repeat on F and F♯. (Skip C, C♯, D and D♯ for this particular exercise: those four use their own dedicated fingering in each octave rather than sharing one, so they won't demonstrate the effect.) This is the single best exercise for isolating and training the air-and-embouchure skill that drives the middle of the flute's range.

Step 2 — Long tones through the middle register (5 minutes)

Start on middle C5 and play a long tone for eight slow beats at mezzo forte. Move up chromatically through the middle register to high C6. Hold each note for eight beats. If a note cracks into the wrong octave, stay on it until it settles before moving on.

Step 3 — Third-octave approach notes (5 minutes)

Start on high C6 and slur up to C♯6. Hold for eight beats. Once stable, move to D6, then D♯6. Only move on when the current note is reliable. Keep a tuner running — third-octave notes tend to run sharp.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do flute fingerings repeat in every octave? +

Not exactly, but the low and middle registers share a great deal. Unlike saxophone and clarinet, the flute has no dedicated octave or register key — from E4 to B4, notes use the same fingering in both octaves, and you move between them mainly by adjusting air speed and embouchure. C, C♯, D and D♯ are the exception, using their own dedicated fingering in each octave. Fingerings diverge properly from D6 upward, and the third octave uses largely different combinations again.

What is the flute's G♯ key? +

The G♯ (A♭) key is a small key operated by the left-hand little finger, positioned just below the third left-hand tone hole. It is added to the standard G fingering to produce G♯, and stays involved in several fingerings further up the range.

What is the thumb B♭ key on flute? +

The thumb B♭ (sometimes called the thumb lever or “B♭ shake key”) is operated by the left thumb, and sits right next to the thumb plate the left thumb normally rests on. Many players swap onto it instead of the thumb plate for B♭ itself, and it appears in a handful of alternate fingerings further up the range.

What is the difference between open-hole and closed-hole (plateau) flutes? +

Open-hole (French model) flutes have a small hole in the centre of four of the keys, which must be fully covered by the fingertip for the note to speak cleanly. Closed-hole (plateau or German model) flutes have solid keys, which are easier for beginners. The fingerings themselves — which keys go down for which note — are identical on both models.

What is a B-foot joint on flute? +

A B-foot joint is an extended foot joint with an extra key that lowers the flute’s range down to B3, a semitone below the standard low C. It is common on intermediate and professional flutes and adds two rollers for the right-hand little finger to rest on.

Why does the flute not have a register key like a saxophone or clarinet? +

The flute is an open-tube, edge-blown instrument rather than a reed instrument, and players move between octaves primarily through embouchure shape and air speed rather than a mechanical key. Small fingering adjustments do occur higher in the range, but there is no single thumb key that jumps every note up an octave the way there is on saxophone.

What is the highest practical note on a standard flute? +

Most method books and orchestral parts treat C7 (two octaves and a fifth above middle C, three ledger lines above the treble staff) as the top of the standard practical range. Notes above this are possible on a well-set-up flute with an experienced player but are considered part of the extreme register and are far less standardised.
