Clarinet Lessons for Beginners
Mastering the clarinet may be something you’ve wanted to do, but never gotten around to before now. Whether you’re learning from scratch or perhaps your child is upgrading from a recorder, I’m here to help! I offer beginner clarinet lessons both online and in-person across London for children and adults alike, so it doesn’t matter if you’re 8 years old or 60.
During your first hour-long private session, I’ll get to know you, go through the basics of how to put a clarinet together,
explain which reed is best for you and how to fit it to the mouthpiece, discuss playing posture and breathing techniques, and teach you how to play musical notes on your woodwind instrument.
The clarinet is a great woodwind instrument for beginners as it is easy to play, has a beautiful tone, and can be used to play a range of music genres from classical to jazz. The clarinet shares fingerings and techniques with all woodwind instruments, so if you or your child wants to eventually learn to play saxophone, it's an easy jump to make!
Online Clarinet Lessons
Struggling to find a clarinet teacher near you, or would prefer to practise alone from the comfort of your own home? Thanks to the power of technology, you can learn to play clarinet or improve your skills online. Simply sign up for a virtual class and I’ll teach you via Skype, Zoom or a video platform of your choice. Join using your phone, tablet, or computer from anywhere in the world.
Each one-on-one virtual clarinet lesson will be easy to follow, delivered at your pace, and tailored to your needs so you can get the same value as you would in person. I’ll also give you access to free resources to help with your remote learning.
In-Person Clarinet Lessons
In-person, face-to-face learning is the most traditional and effective way to learn clarinet. It means we can work on rhythm and timing better, and play music together as I accompany you on piano. This is a great way to keep learners motivated!
Students can attend private tutoring classes at my premises in Lewisham, or I will travel to you if you live local to me in London (Hither Green, Blackheath, Lee, Lewisham, Dulwich or Greenwich).
Learning in person allows us to play together, developing skills in jazz improvisation for clarinet, or ensemble performance skills for ABRSM exam preparation.

What My Clarinet Students Say
Tom is an inspirational teacher and musician. He taught my son Logan Clarinet from beginner to grade 5 with fantastic results. Logan recently achieved grade 6 and is studying GCSE music which I put down to Tom instilling this interest in him.
Tom also introduced Logan to the saxophone and is giving him a refresher to allow him to play for relaxation and maintain his love of jazz. I could not recommend Tom highly enough for his warm and supportive teaching and motivational approach.
