A Medieval Melody with Victorian Words

Good King Wenceslas tells the story of a tenth-century Bohemian duke braving harsh winter weather to give alms to a poor peasant on the Feast of Stephen (26 December). The tune, however, is much older than the familiar English words: it comes from “Tempus Adest Floridum,” a spring carol published in the 1582 Finnish collection Piae Cantiones.

The English lyrics telling the Wenceslas legend were written by the hymnwriter John Mason Neale in 1853, who paired his new text with the existing medieval spring melody.

As a storytelling carol, the melody is built from short, repeatable phrases with a strong, march-like pulse — a structure that works well because so many verses of narrative need to fit the same tune without it becoming tiresome.
