Phillips Brooks's Christmas Eve Poem

Phillips Brooks, an American Episcopal clergyman, wrote the words to O Little Town of Bethlehem in 1868, inspired by a visit to Bethlehem he had made a few years earlier while travelling in the Holy Land on Christmas Eve.

Brooks's own church organist, Lewis Redner, composed the tune most familiar in the US especially for these words, reportedly finishing the melody the night before it was first performed.
