A Traditional English Carol

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is one of the oldest English carols still in common use, likely dating from the sixteenth century or earlier, though its author is unknown. The comma in the title matters: “god rest ye merry” was an old English phrase meaning “may God grant you peace and happiness,” not an instruction for “merry gentlemen” to rest.

Like The First Noel, the carol was preserved through oral and street-carolling tradition before being formally collected and published by William Sandys in 1833. Its minor-key melody sets it apart from most of the brighter major-key carols on this page, giving it a more solemn, atmospheric character.
