About O Come, All Ye Faithful

Adeste Fideles, Attributed to John Francis Wade

O Come, All Ye Faithful began life as the Latin hymn Adeste Fideles, most commonly attributed to the English Catholic layman John Francis Wade, who is believed to have composed both words and music sometime between 1743 and 1751 while living in exile in France.

The widely sung English translation was made by the clergyman Frederick Oakeley in 1841, originally under the title “Ye Faithful, Approach Ye.” Both the original Latin hymn and the standard English translation are well over a century old, making this chart free to keep permanently.

A Broad, Processional Melody

The tune has a stately, processional quality suited to its origins as a hymn of arrival and adoration — long, sustained phrases and a triumphant “O come let us adore Him” refrain that builds naturally to a strong final cadence, making it well suited to a full, confident arrangement rather than a stripped-back one.

One simplified concert-pitch harmonisation — traditional carols were passed down as melodies, so chord choices vary between arrangers and songbooks.
