Watts's Hymn, Set by Lowell Mason

The words to Joy to the World were written by the English hymnwriter Isaac Watts in 1719 as a poetic paraphrase of Psalm 98, and were not originally conceived as a Christmas text at all — Watts intended it as a hymn about Christ's ultimate reign rather than the nativity specifically.

The now-familiar tune was arranged in 1848 by the American church musician Lowell Mason, who drew on melodic phrases reminiscent of Handel's Messiah (though Mason's arrangement is his own composition, not a direct quotation). Both words and music are well over a century old, making this chart free to keep permanently.

The opening phrase's famous descending scale, from the tonic down through a full octave, gives the tune an unusually strong, singable shape that translates well into an improvised solo — that descending line is easy to quote or vary, making it a satisfying tune to stretch out on rather than just state and move past.
