About The First Noel

A Traditional English Carol

The First Noel is one of the oldest carols on this page, with roots that likely go back to medieval England, though it survived mainly through oral tradition among West Country carollers for centuries before anyone wrote it down. “Noel” comes from the French word for Christmas, itself derived from the Latin natalis, “birth.”

The carol was first collected and published in its now-familiar form in 1833, in William Sandys's anthology Christmas Carols, Ancient and Modern — the same collection responsible for preserving several other traditional English carols.

The melody unfolds in long, gently rolling phrases across a fairly wide range, with the repeated “Noel, Noel” refrain acting as a recurring anchor point.
